Bolo Toss

Bolo toss otherwise commonly known as ladder ball is a fun way to spend an afternoon, holiday or trip with friends and family.  This unique backyard Game offers friendly competition paired with the skill of pitching a ball or bolo through the rungs of a standing ladder.

Similar to the popular game of horseshoes bolo toss is a lawn or backyard game using a bolo or bola instead of horseshoes and a ladder instead of stakes.  A bolo is a rope with weights affixed to each end and is tossed toward a 3 foot ladder with the object of ringing the bolo around the rungs of the ladder.  The ladders usually have three rungs and are free standing, the rungs must be equally spaced with enough room for the bolo to swing and hook around each rung.  This is usually about 6 inches of space between each rung.

In order to play bolo toss you will need at least three bolos per person or team and two free standing ladders.  The ladders will be set up a distance apart from one another and this can be decided upon skill level of the players, the average is approximately 20 feet.  The players randomly decide which team or player will play the first round.  Each round consists of one player tossing a bolo, each player taking turns tossing their bolo’s however they choose.  After each player has gone the points assigned to each rung are added up if a bolo is hanging from that rung and then the second round begins.  The player or team with the highest amount of points from the previous round is the first to toss in the next round.  The bottom rung of the ladder is usually one point, the top rung being two points and the middle rung scoring the players three points as it is the most difficult.  Scoring is easy and a game of bolo toss is generally played up to 21 points and the first team to reach or exceed 21 points wins the game.
