Volleyball

Volley ball is a great sport for many different aspects.  It can be a fun and friendly sport with under hand serves or a competitive and highly active sport with sharp over hand serves that sting when returned.  Volley ball provides an easy to understand game that is active, fun and involves team work with played with more than one person on each team; usually there are at least two players on each side of the net.

In volley ball the court is divided into two halves width wise and a team of two or more, up to 16, on each side of the net that divides the court.  The net is a high net that the ball must be hit over with in three hits on each side.  Usually the three hits are a bump, set and spike.  A bump is when the fore arms are used to slow the ball which is being returned from the opposing team, the ball is bumped into the air above.  Then the set is used with the hands or tips of the fingers to push the ball high into the air for a spike to send it powerfully over the net using an open or closed hand and driving it down to the ground after the net is cleared.  These three types of hits do not have to be used however if playing competitively as in the Olympics or for a competitive team this is the way you are taught.

In volley ball a point is scored when the ball touches the ground in bounds.  If the ball hits the ground out of bounds it can be a foul on the opposing team if coming directly from the opposing team, or a foul on the team that posses the ball and could not return it to play.  The game consists of a team that serves the ball over the net, after one to three hits the ball is returned to the serving team which has the opportunity to hit three times before returning it across the net again, and so on.  When the ball hits the ground and a point is scored the ball is returned to the scoring team to be served back into play.  Volley ball is played up to 21 points and usually in matches of three games.
